Schmidt Lab - Positions Available
GRADUATE RESEARCHER positions available to study proteases that are involved in the maturation of isoprenylated proteins (e.g. Ras). The functional characterization of these recently identified proteases is in progress. Applicants must apply to the UGA Graduate School for admission into the PhD program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BCMB) and should contact the graduate coordinator of the BCMB department (Dr. Alan Przybyla) for more information.
*** Positions are contingent upon availability of research funds. Applicants with independent funding can be placed at any time. ***
To secure independent funding:
POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST positions available to study proteases that are involved in the maturation of isoprenylated proteins (e.g. Ras). The functional characterization of these recently identified proteases is in progress. Applicants with independent funding can apply anytime. Applicants without independent funding must describe their plan to obtain independent funding in their cover letter.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. with a strong background in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, yeast genetics, microbiology, and/or chemistry. The candidate will also have a strong record of scientific achievement, as reflected by publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. Expertise in the area of proteolysis is not required, but it is expected that the candidate's skills will either complement or enrich the expertise of the research program. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the enzymology of proteolysis, structure-function studies, drug discovery, and the identification of novel substrates. These research areas offer ample opportunities to initiate an independent research career.
Please send curriculum vitae and contact information for three references to: Dr. Walter K. Schmidt, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602-72292.
*** This position has been filled, but candidates with independent funding and/or a demonstrable ability to obtain independent funding may still be considered. ***
To secure independent funding:

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH projects are available throughout the year for course credit (e.g, BCMB4960/70, HONS4960/70, etc.). Please contact Dr. Schmidt to determine the availability of these positions. These projects will expose students to a variety of techniques, including PCR, plasmid construction, protein expression, genetic selection, and enzymatic assays. All undergraduate research will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Schmidt or a senior lab member. The qualified applicant should be in an early stage of a Life Science degree program (Biochemistry, Cellular Biology, Genetics, Microbiolgy, etc.), but candidates from other programs will also be considered if a suitable match exists.
To apply for this position, contact Dr. Walter K. Schmidt, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602-72292.
*** Positions for credit (BCMB 4960 and 4970) are evaluated on a continuous basis; please inquire about availability ***
