SPECIAL EVENT

Our lab was visited by the SMA Angels Charity, along with children affected by spinal muscular atrophy and their families. We had the opportunity to learn from them and tell them about our work. It was a fun and inspiring day!

For information on the SMA Angels Charity or spinal muscular atrophy, click on the embedded links.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
  • Spinal muscular atrophy is one of the most common autosomal recessive diseases of humans.
  • The connection between the spinal muscular atrophy disease protein SMN and the snoRNP protein fibrillarin was initially made by 2 undergraduate researchers in our laboratory, Karen (Harisiades) Gorzynski and Chad Hales.
  • Their work (and subsequent studies) led to the hypothesis that SMN mediates the assembly of snoRNPs and revealed a potential link between snoRNP biogenesis and spinal muscular atrophy.
  • Karen and Chad are authors on the article describing this work:
Jones, K.W., Gorzynski, K., Hales, C.M., Fischer, U., Badbanchi, F., Terns, R. M., and Terns, M. P. (2001) Direct interaction of the spinal muscular atrophy disease protein SMN with the small nucleolar RNA-associated protein fibrillarin. Journal of Biological Chemistry, 276:38645-38651. Read Jones et al.
