Welcome !
Thank you for visiting the graduate program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BCMB) at the University of Georgia. We offer training toward research-intensive PhD and MSc degrees that are highly sought-after by academic, industrial, and governmental agencies looking to hire the best and brightest. Approximately half of the over 50 laboratories affiliated with the department are federally funded (NIH, NSF, and/or DOE). This means that there are more than ample resources and opportunities for graduate training.
Our department was one of the first in the country to recognize the importance of collaborative research opportunities for graduate students. While maintaining our own identity as an international leader in cancer research, stem cells, glycoproteomics, metalloenzymes, and structural biology, our program also provides innovative intellectual and physical resources through interdepartmental associations (e.g. see Bioenergy, Cancer Center, and Infectious Disease initiatives). This interactive and cross-disciplinary environment, combined with an atmosphere filled with people who are enthusiastic and passionate about scientific discovery, makes our graduate program an excellent training environment. Please refer to our departmental research areas for a complete and more detailed listing of research opportunities.
Our current graduate student body consists of approximately 60 students from all over the United States and abroad. The department has historically provided competitive stipends and tuition waivers. Subsidized health insurance is also available.
We would be thrilled to have you join our impressive cadre of young and upcoming scientists and thus encourage you to submit an application. We sincerely believe that our program represents an excellent education and training opportunity. If you find you still have questions about our program, please contact us (gradcoordinator@bmb.uga.edu; 706-542-1334). Otherwise, we look forward to your application.
Prerequisites and Timelines
Students enter the PhD program with either a Bachelor's or Master’s degree. The degree typically requires 4-6 years of full time residence. Students enter the MSc program with a Bachelor's degree. The degree typically requires 2 years of full time residence. Applicants should be aware that admission preference is given to PhD applicants.
While several criteria are evaluated when deciding acceptance into our program, students entering our program typically have an undergraduate GPA ≥ 3.2 and GRE scores ≥ 1100 (with a GRE writing score ≥ 3.5). Letters of recommendation are required and previous laboratory research experience is strongly preferred. International students typically have excellent Internet Based TOEFL (IBT) results, including an IBT Speak Test score ≥ 26. On average, 2-3 international students are accepted every year.
