Clanton C. Black, Jr.

Research Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
B.S., M.S., Ph.D. (1960) University of Florida
Member of The Plant Center

Dr. Black's research is centered aroundunderstanding plants with emphasis upon the biochemistry ofcarbon,
nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and calcium assimilation. His work has concentrated upon the C4 pathway of
photosyntheticmetabolism, the daily regulation of Crassulacean acid metabolismand on sucrose metabolism in
higher plants. Currently new ideasabout photoprotection are being integrated with photosynthesisstudies to
enhance crop yields. His laboratory normally isstaffed by graduate students, postdoctoral students and
visitingscholars with a decided international emphasis.

He has served as president and in othernational and regional offices of the American Society of
PlantPhysiologists, as an editor of Plant Physiology and Weeds Today, and on study sections of NSF. In 1976 he
was a SeniorFulbright-Hays Scholar. In 1982 he was chairman of the GordonResearch Conference on "Carbon
Dioxide Fixation by GreenPlants." He is a Fellow of the AAAS, a recipient of theMerit Award from the Botanical
Society of America in recognitionof distinguished achievement in and contributions to theadvancement of
botanical science, recipient of the Alex LaurieAward, and an Honor Member of the Russian Society of
PlantPhysiologists.. His research is supported by the NSF, the U.S.Forest Service, USDA, and the Rockefeller
Foundation.
